The Buzz on Honey

Honey is a sweet treat that is incredibly versatile. It lends a wonderful flavour to cooking and baking, and it is good for you. In addition to being a great source of energy, researchers now know that honey can contribute to our daily intake of vitamins, essential minerals, and amino acids. Honey can even be used to help treat minor cuts and burns.

Keep these tips in mind:

  • Honey is sweeter than sugar, so you can use less of it.
  • Dip apple slices or other fresh fruit in honey.
  • When cooking with honey in place of sugar, begin by substituting half of the amount called for in the recipe (honey can replace all of the sugar in some recipes).
  • Dress up a snack of crackers and cheese with a dab of honey.
  • To bake with honey, remember to reduce the amount of liquid in the recipe by 1/4 cup and add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda for each 1 cup of honey used. Lower oven temperature by 25 degrees (F) to prevent over-browning.
  • Perk up bottled Italian dressing by adding a splash of honey.
  • When measuring honey, coat the measuring cup with non-stick spray before adding the honey–it will slide right out!
  • Mix 2 tablespoons of honey into prepared barbecue sauce - add more to suit your taste.
  • Always store honey at room temperature; never in the refrigerator.
  • Natural crystallization can cause honey can to become cloudy. Place your honey jar in warm water until the crystals disappear, or microwave in a microwave-safe container on HIGH for 2-3 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds.
  • Never boil honey.

IMPORTANT: Do not feed honey to infants under one year of age.
